Stolas, heirloom magnifier

Magnifying glasses invite discovery but often fade into the background. Through Stolas, I explore how tools shape behavior and foster relationships. Inspired by wood—its stories of the past and life beyond ours—I consider tools as companions, that we share time with, rather than possessions.

Inspiration

Stolas beetles, inspire both the form and its purpose—to take a closer look at the creatures we share the planet with.

Ideation

A traditional magnifying glass handle—thin, long, and designed for one-handed use creates distance from the tool. Instead, through a wider grip I hope to bring you closer.

The flared design inspired by the beetle creates smooth transitions between the wooden form and the glass. It focuses on subtle affordances, like a divot around the top edge, fostering a more intimate interaction.

Fabrication Process

Glass and rivet holes cut out first.

3D printed jigs to support shaping.

Hand carving form and ensuring 3 identical pieces are made.

Finishing shaping after assembly of layers and oiling!
